| No other industry relies on engines and generators as much as the marine industry. Engines provide propulsion power to vessels ranging in size from a small tugboat to a large cruise ship. They do so by directly coupling to the propeller to move the ship through water. Marine generators provide electrical power to all of the auxiliary systems on a vessel. When a vessel is built, one of the first steps is the installation of a marine engine and generator to provide all of the power to the ship. Large vessels can contain several engines and generators to ensure smooth operation. Marine engines and generators are different from their industrial counterparts in that they are specifically designed to be used in a vessel. These differences include bigger oil pans, water cooled manifolds, variable speed governors, water cooled turbos, and marine certifications. They can also be rated on a scale of A to E, depending upon the horsepower and speed of the engine.
